Reggie Bush had surgery on his left knee and it's unclear when the New Orleans Saints running back will be back with the team.

Bush, injured on a punt return in the first half of Sunday's 30-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers, had the operation Monday in Birmingham, Ala., Saints spokesman Greg Bensel said Tuesday in an e-mail to The Associated Press. He gave no other details.

Instead of accompanying his teammates on the trip to London to face the San Diego Chargers on Sunday at Wembley Stadium, Bush instead visited Dr. James Andrews.
"He has been a big part of what we have been able to do offensively and it's an injury that we have to deal with," Saints coach Sean Payton said shortly after the team arrived Monday. "Hopefully on a short-term basis rather than a long-term basis, and it sounds like that's the case."

Bush sustained cartilage damage, and some athletes have missed several months because of surgery to repair similar injuries.
"From a timing standpoint, it falls with this game and then a bye weekend, so there is a little bit of time there for him as it pertains to his recovery," Payton said. "We'll have to make some adjustments offensively."

Aaron Stecker or Pierre Thomas will be called on to play alongside Deuce McAllister in the backfield.
The Saints played the final four games of last season without Bush due to a knee injury, and they went 2-2.
"Hopefully we won't skip a beat," Saints quarterback Drew Brees said. "Obviously we will miss Reggie, just like we will miss any guy who is that productive for us offensively."
Bush entered the game against Carolina with an NFL-best 41 receptions.
The 2005 Heisman Trophy winner from Southern California missed practice early last week with swelling in his left knee. He had 55 yards on nine carries, caught one pass for 5 yards, and had a 3.5 average on three punt returns against Carolina.

NFL.com and The Boston Globe reported the story Tuesday. The Patriots have yet to confirm the news.

Harrison was carted off the field on the final play of the third quarter of New England's 41-7 rout of Denver on Monday night. After the game, Patriots coach Bill Belichick said the injury "doesn't look too good" and "it was difficult [for all of us] watching Rodney get carted off."

The Rays defeated the Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS, 3-1, on Sunday night to advance to their first-ever World Series. Matt Garza started for Tampa Bay, and pitched seven strong innings of one-run baseball. He struck out nine, walked three, and gave up just two hits.

Garza was named the 2008 ALCS MVP. After Alex Cora reached in the eighth inning on an error by shortstop Jason Bartlett to start the inning, Tampa manager Joe Maddon used Dan Wheeler, J.P. Howell, Chad Bradford, and David Price to get out of the inning unscathed. Price then remained on the mound in the top of ninth to preserve the win for the Rays, sending them to their first World Series in a season of firsts for Tampa Bay.

Dustin Pedroia put Boston on the board in the first inning with a solo shot off Garza, and Jon Lester was in complete control through the game's first three innings. The Rays rallied in the fourth, though, as Evan Longoria hit an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. Rocco Baldelli then hit an RBI single in the fifth to give the Rays a 2-1 lead. Lester pitched seven innings, struck out eight, and walked none. However, he wasn't able to get out of the game before Willy Aybar hit a solo home run in the seventh, pushing Tampa Bay's lead to 3-1 heading into the eighth inning. Boston loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, but a combination of five pitchers retired the Sox without a single run coming across the plate. After Hideki Okajima retired the Rays in order, Price trotted back out onto the mound for Tampa Bay with the Sox down to their last three outs. Price walked Jason Bay on eight pitches but struck out Mark Kotsay and Jason Varitek to move the Rays to within one out of the World Series. Jed Lowrie came to the plate, pinch-hitting for Cora, and grounded out to second to end Boston's season. The Rays will host the Phillies on Wednesday in Game 1 of the World

About an hour before his team ralphs on itself, loses its third game in four weeks and goes into full crisis mode, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is walking on the Edward Jones Dome field with his two plainclothes security guards and the team public relations director. He stops to tell a story.

"I asked a man one time who had 300 restaurants, 'How do you find all those cooks? How can you find people who can cook 24 hours a day?'" says Jones, whose left jacket lapel features a Salvation Army pin and a diamond-studded star. "He said, 'You got to remember one thing: If it's supposed to be cold, make it ice cold. If it's supposed to be warm, burn your mouth. You can cover up a lot of things with intensity.'"
Jones pauses. "I admit there's some frailties around here, but we try to make up for it with heat, with heat."

Right now, the Cowboys are generating all the heat of a rain-soaked book of matches. If you're wondering if Jones' team is in serious trouble, they are. Any more frail and they'd break into tears.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady underwent a second procedure on his injured left knee Wednesday to clear out an infection, The Boston Globe reported, citing a West Coast source close to Brady.

BradyBrady initially had surgery on Oct. 6 to repair torn ligaments, and doctors said the procedure went well. But Brady began to feel ill this week due to the infection, according to the report.
Dr. Nicholas DiNubile, a knee specialist and spokesman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, has not examined Brady's knee injury, but said that generally, an infection must be aggressively treated and monitored, according to the report.
"This can happen to anyone having a surgery, but it's a relatively rare occurrence after knee procedures," DiNubile said, according to the Globe. "The earlier you recognize and treat it -- that's surgery and antibiotics -- the less likely you're going to have problems down the line. The best-case scenario is that they got it early, and if everything goes right, he would be back at the same time as was expected."

He suffered a broken pinkie finger on his throwing hand in a 30-24 loss at Arizona on Sunday, and Dallas' medical staff said that he will miss a month. The injury did not require surgery.

Romo did not practice on Wednesday but did throw the ball on the side with his fractured pinkie in a splint, and according to eyewitnesses, he was able to throw the ball with good velocity and appeared confident after throwing. The session was not open to reporters.

There is no assurance he can protect the ball, take a snap or deliver the ball accurately under game conditions.

The Cowboys' biggest concern is that Romo gets hit again, causing him to miss more time than initially anticipated and possibly require surgery.

Romo huddled with owner Jerry Jones, vice president Stephen Jones, coach Wade Phillips and the medical and training staff while the team practiced to discuss the quarterback's prognosis, a source told ESPN's Ed Werder.

Brett Favre, who has started an NFL-record 258 consecutive regular-season games, told ESPN on Tuesday that he called Tony Romo and encouraged him to try to play.

"The only thing I said was, it's worth trying [to play] if you can deal with the pain and can function good enough with a splint,'' Favre said. "If not, don't try.''

Favre has played through a fractured thumb in the past.

After saying he'd try to play, Romo's streak of 32 consecutive starts is now in the hands of Cowboys coaches and medical staff.

The owners of Euroleague team Olympiacos, which shook up the NBA by signing Atlanta Hawks sixth man Josh Childress, say they're just getting started signing NBA players.

Panayiotis AngelopoulosPanayiotis Angelopoulos, a billionaire who owns Olympiacos with his brother George, said he wants to make his team the best in the world outside the NBA, according to The New York Times.
"Next season I will open up a small office for free agents in New York, and I will take petitions," Angelopoulos said.

Childress stunned many NBA observers when he signed a guaranteed three-year deal worth $20 million after taxes with Olympiacos, rather than re-sign with the Hawks. Olympiacos is paying Childress' Greek taxes, the 10 percent agent's fee and his housing and expenses, increasing the team's cost to $30 million, according to the report.

According to The Times, Angelopoulos said he had in the past three years negotiated with NBA players including Chris Webber, Michael Finley, James Posey, Anthony Parker, Charlie Bell, Ricky Davis, Jannero Pargo and Maurice Evans.

Olympiacos, with a $70 million operating budget and the backing of the Angelopoulos brothers' billions, could be a serious player in the free-agent market. The family owns shipping and steel companies and Angelopoulos said he has done multimillion-dollar business deals, according to the report.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has been suspended for at least four games for his most recent violation of the league's personal conduct policy, the NFL announced Tuesday.

Jones The league said Jones was involved in an alcohol-related incident at a Dallas hotel on Oct. 8. Previous reports indicated Jones was involved in an alcohol-related scuffle with a bodyguard assigned to him by the Cowboys, and that hotel employees called the police.
Jones will not be paid during the suspension. Commissioner Roger Goodell will determine the ultimate length of Jones' suspension after Dallas' Week 11 game against Washington on Nov. 16.
In his letter to Jones informing the player of his latest suspension, Goodell said Jones' "disturbing pattern of behavior was clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL."

League and law enforcement sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that Goodell was expected to weigh whether Jones was in potential violation of his probation, in which he was prohibited from alcohol-related incidents.
When Goodell reinstated Jones from suspension before the regular season began, sources said one of the commissioner's conditions for Jones to remain an active player was that he remain in compliance with all aspects of his three-year probation from when he pleaded no contest last February to a felony in Fayette County, Ga.

Police reported that Jones might have been drinking when he was involved in the scuffle with a Cowboys-assigned bodyguard last week in Dallas. But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has refuted many of the allegations and speculation. Even though police were called to the scene, no arrests were made or charges filed.

Jones began his time in Dallas under close scrutiny by the league after he was suspended for the entire 2007 season for multiple violations of the conduct policy while he was a member of the Tennessee Titans. The Cowboys traded for Jones before his suspension was over and he was reinstated by Goodell on Aug. 28.

Goodell also said his decision on whether Jones can return to play will be based on Jones' strict compliance with the NFL and the Cowboys in relation to treatment plans and evaluations by clinical experts.

The makeup of the Red Sox's roster could be a concern for players they pursue, whether it's this off-season or in the future.

After what might have been its most successful night as a mixed martial arts promoter, ProElite finds itself on the defensive. For the past several days, the Los Angeles-based company has been fending off allegations of fight fixing.

Shortly after stopping Kimbo Slice in 14 seconds in Sunrise, Fla., on Saturday, last-minute replacement Seth Petruzelli began granting interviews. But it was the one he conducted Monday with an Orlando, Fla.-based radio station that has put ProElite under the microscope.
"The promoters kind of hinted to me and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him," Petruzelli said on "The Monsters in Orlando" show. "They didn't want me to take him down, let's just put it that way. It was worth my while to try to stand up and punch with him."

Petruzelli has since claimed his comment was "misconstrued." But the damage was too great to simply go away quietly. His words implied that ProElite attempted to influence the fight, causing the issue to mushroom.

Eli Manning has always been the kid brother. Peyton was a highly lauded No. 1 overall NFL draft choice when Eli was still in high school. When Eli in turn became a No. 1 overall draft choice, there was whispering about how he was only riding his older brother's coattails. Few football scouts -- including scouts for the San Diego Chargers, who drafted and then promptly traded away Eli -- thought he would match his brother's achievements. Eli has been booed in New York (which, for NFL purposes, is located in New Jersey); Peyton has never been booed in Indianapolis. New York sports radio hosts and callers once shrieked that the Chargers picked the Giants' pockets in that trade. In their joint commercials, Eli has always appeared deferential and inconsequential compared to Peyton. Two years ago at the Super Bowl in Miami, where Peyton's Colts would line up, TMQ saw Eli at a party. He looked miserable -- not just out of sorts, but miserable. Big brother was outshining him, as usual.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - An unapologetic Plaxico Burress rejoined the New York Giants on Monday, noting he didn't lose any sleep after the Super Bowl champions suspended him for a game.

Burress missed a team meeting two weeks ago without bothering to telephone the Giants.
The receiver who caught the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl attributed his absence on Sept. 22 to a family emergency, which he described as having to take his son to school.
"It was just a situation I had to deal with that morning, and I made the right decision," Burress said during a conference call that lasted about 20 minutes. "I don't have any regrets about the decision I made at all."
Burress said family would still come first next time, but that he would make sure he made a telephone call to let the Giants know about the problem.
"My emotions were that they suspended me," said Burress, who sat out Sunday's 44-7 win over Seattle. "That was the decision they chose to do. I'll take it at that. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. I got me some rest and was able to get away for a while and chill out and relax. Things like that happen. I'll keep moving forward and get back to doing what I do: catching footballs, scoring touchdowns and get back to work."

Along with the suspension, Burress was fined one week's pay, or roughly $117,500. The Giants originally docked him $235,000, but the player and the team reached a settlement last week that cut the fine in half.
Burress, who caught a career-high 12 touchdowns last season, never explained why he did not report to Giants Stadium after dropping his son off at school. He indicated that there was more involved without getting into explanations.

Tony Stewart was the first driver convicted of dipping below NASCAR's out-of-bounds line, learning a valuable lesson in 2001 at Daytona that he's carried with him the last seven years.
So when Regan Smith slid under the line Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway to finish first, Stewart was certain he'd be awarded his first victory of the season.

NASCAR agreed with him, and Stewart made his first trip to Talladega's Victory Lane in 20 career starts. But Smith was adamant he'd done nothing wrong, arguing that the two-time series champion forced him below the line in a desperate blocking attempt.
"You're darn right I did. I've lost Daytona 500s, I've lost races here at Talladega because somebody blocked," Stewart said. "That's the name of the game. There's always been people blocking. The nice thing is I was actually on the right end of it this time.
"Trust me, I've got no regrets about what I did. I did exactly what I needed to do to win the race, and it worked out."

Talladega Results

Tony Stewart survived two major wrecks and one wild finish en route to his first win in 20 career starts at Talladega. Stewart has come close on this track before, finishing second six times.
1. Tony Stewart, Toyota
2. Regan Smith, Chevrolet
3. Paul Menard, Chevrolet
4. David Ragan, Ford
5. Jeff Burton, Chevrolet
6. Clint Bowyer, Chevrolet
7. Bobby Labonte, Dodge
8. Scott Riggs, Chevrolet
9. Robby Gordon, Dodge
10. Jimmie Johnson, Chevrolet

Complete results

Smith was in second and trailed Stewart for the final three laps, and the rookie made one attempt to grab his first career victory by ducking inside of Stewart to attempt a pass.
Stewart wouldn't relent, moving with Smith down the track until Smith dove below the yellow line to make the pass. He moved back onto the racing surface in front of Stewart and cruised to the finish line.
NASCAR reviewed the move -- a driver is allowed to make the pass if officials believe he was forced under the line -- and declared it illegal. Smith went with Dale Earnhardt Inc. president Max Siegel to argue the decision, but was rebuffed and dropped to 18th in the final finishing order.
"We just watched the tape. They can argue about it for five years, they're not going to change the decision. That's not how NASCAR works," Smith said. "I totally disagree with them 110 percent. I clearly moved to the outside, moved back to the inside. Tony made a move to the high side and made a move to the bottom side.
"My nose was in there. The only other option I had was to wreck him."
The ruling helped Stewart snap a 43-race winless streak dating to Watkins Glen last year and allowed him to cross Talladega off his list of tracks where he'd failed to earn a win. Talladega has taunted him for 10 years, as Stewart finished second a maddening six times.
It looked as if he'd again come up short in his final race here with Joe Gibbs Racing, especially after he was caught in a Friday accident when Dale Earnhardt Jr. blew a tire. Crew chief Greg Zipadelli decided to fix the damaged car instead of moving to the backup, and the No. 20 crew worked late Friday night making the repairs.

A five-fight losing streak apparently has done nothing to shake Ken Shamrock's confidence. There isn't a hint of doubt in his voice that Saturday night (CBS at 9 ET) he will become the first to beat Kimbo Slice in a cage.

"I'm gonna be too fast for him," Shamrock said. "He's gonna eat my punches and kicks."

It is difficult to share Shamrock's enthusiasm. Throughout this current losing skid, he has failed to get out of the first round.

The culprit is his now vulnerable chin. At 44, the hall of famer no longer takes a good punch. And a weak chin plays right to Slice's strength.

But Shamrock is undeterred.

While others have focused on his declining physical skills, Shamrock (26-13-2) is encouraged by Slice's limited talents in the cage. He even shrugs off Slice's well-documented punching power.

"The only time he knocks anyone out is when they get tired," said Shamrock, who faces Slice at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. "I don't respect his power or grappling ability. I'm gonna go in there and whip [him]."

Despite such assuredness, it is hard to imagine Shamrock taking Slice's punching power lightly. But for his ability to hit hard, Slice would not be unbeaten in mixed martial arts competition.

Slice, a Miami resident whose real name is Kevin Ferguson, has only three professional MMA fights -- none has gone the distance. The most recent bout, however, intensified doubts about his legitimacy as a cage fighter.

James Thompson, a 6-foot-5, 265-pounder, was thought to be an easy opponent for Slice. The fight -- held May 31 in Newark, N.J. -- was expected to last no more than a round.

But Thompson tossed a monkey wrench into Slice's plans. He took Slice to the ground and nearly submitted him.

Slice survived the ground attack and eventually came away with a disputed third-round TKO. But the fight proved he is vulnerable when forced off his feet. His cardio, or lack thereof, also came into question.
If Shamrock is to pull off an upset, taking this fight to the ground might be his best approach. Slice, however, insists he is prepared to succeed standing up or on the ground.
