The inevitable became reality Tuesday when Lane Kiffin was fired by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis without pay via the telephone, according to team sources.
Tom Cable, the team's offensive line coach, was emerging as the leading candidate to replace Kiffin, a source said. Cable was among three coaches interviewed by Davis on Monday night; the others were offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and special consultant Paul Hackett.
Davis is expected to have a press conference later Tuesday to explain his decision to dismiss Kiffin.

Unlike the St. Louis Rams, who fired coach Scott Linehan on Monday, the news was not delivered by Davis in a face-to-face meeting. Kiffin was notified by a team executive Tuesday morning that Davis would call him at 9:15 a.m. PT to relieve the coach of his duties. The call came shortly after that time.

Linehan also was allowed to speak briefly with his players on Monday. Kiffin will not be afforded the same opportunity, a source said.
The news did not blindside Kiffin, who was informed by a team executive that he would be fired after the Raiders 24-23 loss to the Buffalo Bills in week three. Even though Davis didn't act a week ago, as Kiffin was told, many team insiders expected the Oakland owner to fire the coach during this bye week.

The Raiders are 1-3, having blown leads in the fourth quarter to the Bills and the San Diego Chargers. During Kiffin's 20-game tenure, in which the team was 5-15, the Raiders took leads into the fourth quarter of 11 games.

Davis hired Kiffin, who was USC's offensive coordinator at the time, as the NFL's youngest coach at 31 years old in February 2007. Even though many observers questioned the hiring, Kiffin ultimately gained respect around the league for fielding a significantly more competitive team than the Raiders had displayed before he was hired.
Despite being competitive in the majority of games, Kiffin and Davis had a falling out on several fronts, starting when Davis believed Kiffin expressed private interest in the head coaching position at the University of Arkansas during the 2007 season.

However, it was well-documented that their relationship disintegrated when Kiffin attempted to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan after the 2007 season. A source said Kiffin suggested to Davis that the owner had reneged on an agreement that the coach would have control over his own staff. Shortly thereafter, Davis sent a letter of resignation for Kiffin to sign, sources said. Kiffin declined.

Kiffin also opposed some of Davis' big free-agent signings such as wide receiver Javon Walker and, to a lesser degree, cornerback DeAngelo Hall, sources said. Kiffin also expressed public frustration that the team was not more aggressive in claiming other team's released players via the waiver process to strengthen the bottom of the roster.

However, a Raiders source said that Davis privately sent a letter to Kiffin after the season's opening-game loss to the Broncos, attempting to "document" that the coach approved of the offseason acquisitions. A source close to Kiffin described that claim as "fiction."

ST. LOUIS -- The winless St. Louis Rams fired coach Scott Linehan on Monday, the day after a fourth straight lopsided loss to start the season.
Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, once the coach of the New Orleans Saints, will replace Linehan on an interim basis. The Rams scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon.
"I have enormous respect for Scott Linehan as a person and believe under the right circumstances he will be regarded one day as a fine head coach," owner Chip Rosenbloom said in a release. "Unfortunately, the situation with the Rams as they exist today is no longer acceptable and we have to make a change."

ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen first reported the firing.
Linehan had an overall 11-25 record in his first head coaching job. The Rams have been outscored 147-43 this season, and have allowed at least 30 points in seven straight games dating back to last year.

Scott Linehan's tenure as Rams coach will go down as the third-worst in Rams franchise history. Linehan was fired after the Rams started the season 0-4.

The move was made heading into the Rams' bye week and several hours after the Buffalo Bills outscored them 25-0 in the second half of a 31-14 victory Sunday.
St. Louis has lost 17 of its last 20 games overall.

The 0-4 start is the second straight for the Rams, who lost their first eight games last year en route to a 3-13 finish that landed them with the second pick in the draft.

Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade mentioned the New York Knicks as a possible destination when he hits free agency in summer 2010, and said he would be open to Miami pursuing point guard Stephon Marbury if he becomes available.

New Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni worked with Wade as an assistant coach on the Olympic basketball team, and the Heat star said he would be interested in playing for the offensive-minded coach.
''I mean, I love offense. Why wouldn't I? I love him,'' Wade told Newsday during a promotional tour in New York. ``When we're in practice, I love [Portland Trailblazers coach] Nate McMillan, but I want to be on Mike D'Antoni's team because Nate is preaching all defense and Mike is preaching all offense.''
Wade also cautioned not to judge Marbury. The rebuilding Knicks are expected to waive Marbury -- whose ego and attitude earned him the nickname ''Starbury'' -- in the coming weeks. Wade played on the 2004 Olympic team with Marbury.

''You can never judge a guy by what you've heard because if that was the case, then Shaq wouldn't have been the ideal teammate for me as well,'' Wade said. ``He came to Miami and everything I heard about him, none of it showed. You can't ever judge a guy by what he's done in his past or what you've heard about him.''
The most pressing issue for the Heat long-term will be building a team that appeases Wade to keep him after he becomes a free agent. The star-studded 2010 free-agent class is expected to include Chris Bosh and LeBron James, among others.
James also has been linked to New York because it would allow him to play in a big market, and he would have two options. The Nets are building a new arena and will be moving to Brooklyn and James' close friend and business mentor, Jay-Z, is part-owner of the team. The Knicks also are expected to target James.
''We know that 2010 is a big year,'' Wade said. ``I'm a part of that year, so I know it's a big year.
``The Knicks are not worried about me. They're worried about No. 23, and he's in Cleveland. I'm in a good market in Miami. He's not in a good market in Cleveland, marketing-wise, so it just makes sense that everyone wants to see one of the best players in one of the best markets.
``It's going to be a lot to decide for him. So I just get all the attention off me and throw it on him, so it's easy.''

A YouTube video from a charity flag football game in July has Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard embroiled in controversy yet again

The video, from Allen Iverson's event, shows Howard, as the national anthem is being sung, saying: "'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on. I don't celebrate this [expletive]. I'm black." Howard also makes a hard-to-hear reference to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama (see the video here; some viewers may find content offensive).

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said, according to The Dallas Morning News, that the team dealt with Howard at the time of the incident. He added that the team has a plan in place to address the issue at training camp.

"That said, we will be going through some advanced communication skill sessions together this training camp," Cuban said Tuesday. "I have explained to him that cell phone cameras are not your friend and that what you think you said on camera is never what people will hear when it shows up on YouTube or TV."

Also in July, Howard was arrested and charged with speeding (94 mph in a 55 mph zone), careless and reckless driving, and speed competition in North Carolina. He was released from jail on a written promise to appear in court Sept. 23.

In that incident, police said an officer saw a black Lexus and a silver Volkswagen speeding along U.S. 421. The officer stopped the Lexus, and Howard was identified as the driver.

Last year, Howard admitted he is an occasional marijuana user. And in 2006, Howard opted out of playing for the U.S. Olympic team program, reportedly because he said it conflicted with his summer training camps.

Derek Jeter got to first base and heard the cheers. He had broken Lou Gehrig's record for hits at Yankee Stadium with his first-inning single, and the sellout crowd of 52,558 kept on applauding. Finally, after close to a minute, Jeter took off his helmet and waved it.

"I'm always a little uncomfortable in those situations," Jeter said.

Jeter's hit off Gavin Floyd was his 1,270th in the 85-year-old ballpark, scheduled to close Sunday. But the skidding Yankees, who almost surely will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1993, lost to the Chicago White Sox 6-2 Tuesday night.

"It's kind of hard to enjoy it because we lost the game," Jeter said. "I was talking with my parents last night. They were saying, you know, you need to sit back and try to enjoy it while it's happening, because I'm always thinking about how we can win and things like that. But this is something that is pretty special. I mean, I'd be lying to you if I said it wasn't. Records are made to be broken, but this one at least will never be broken."

The hit came in Jeter's 8,002nd major league at-bat, and he passed Gehrig for second on the Yankees' career list behind Mickey Mantle (8,102). Jeter added a fifth-inning single.

"He's a true Yankee," manager Joe Girardi said. "I think he embodies what baseball people want to see in a player: a guy that goes about his business the right way. He stays out of the headlines. He just does a lot of great things. He's important to the community. He gives back all the time, to children, to everyone."

Mets manager Jerry Manuel's voice was soft and steady. His words were strong.

Manuel was New York's bench coach in September 2007, so he knows full well what this team went through then, and he was not pleased Monday night by a 7-2 loss to the Washington Nationals that cut the Mets' NL East lead to a half-game over idle Philadelphia.

"We come in and need a game and don't play well," Manuel said. "That can happen, but it shouldn't happen at this time of the year."

Fast Facts

• The Mets have now lost three of their last four games, falling to 7-5 in September.

• New York's 3-4-5 hitters went a combined 0-for-11 while Washington's were 5-for-10 with six runs and three RBIs.

• Nats starter John Lannan, who allowed eight hits in three innings in his last start vs. the Mets, gave up just one hit in seven innings.

Everywhere Manuel looked, he saw bad news, and it added up to his team's third loss in its past four games, eating into what was a 3 1/2-game cushion over the Phillies as recently as Wednesday. New York has 13 games left, Philadelphia has 12.

In the days since the New England Patriots held thanks-but-no-thanks meetings with Chris Simms and Tim Rattay, there's been speculation another free-agent QB signing is afoot.

Daunte Culpepper is out there, and Randy Moss might be lobbying for him to replace Tom Brady.

Culpepper's passes kept Moss happily fed with the Minnesota Vikings, where they became one of the NFL's nastiest combos. Culpepper had an MVP-like year just four seasons ago, his gaudy stats including 4,717 yards, 39 TDs and 110.9 passer rating.
